Last year I put my yellow paper in a plastic enclosure to shield it from the rain, and taped it firmly in place so it wouldn't be caught by the wind and blown away.

Russell Hoban’s birthday began, in White Rock, British Columbia, Canada, with a menacing darkness squatted defiantly over Semiahmoo Bay. My yellow paper had been wrapped in plastic, as always, to protect it from an inevitable rain coast pelting - and subsequent melting - of Mr. Hoban’s words, but the particularly unwelcoming weather kept me inside until early afternoon …

At 2:00 PM Pacific Standard Time, on Russell Hoban’s naming day when he come 86, the dark clouds parted and the sun shone down. I headed down to the beach with my lovely wife, yellow paper in hand.

Reality is ungraspable. For convenience we use a limited-reality consensus in which work can be done, transport arranged, and essential services provided. The real reality is something else--only the strangeness of it can be taken in...

It was left on the best bench. Close to the water but distant from the action. A peaceful yet powerful spot. The wind was still whipping up the water. The gulls like that.

I am proud to once again represent for White Rock. I hear that, as of this year, I’m no longer the only Canadian contributor to SA4QE. This makes me proud as well.

I am surprised (but proud) to see that I am still the only contributor from Canada. Since I am the only one, it is a little embarrassing that I have chosen the same quote as last time for my SA4QE event. I have made up for this, I believe, with the significance and beauty of the location of my yellow paper.
As of this beautiful west coast morning my quote is firmly affixed to the very large and anomalous White Rock after which my city is named.

Being is not a steady state but an occulting one: we are all of us a succession of stillnesses blurring into motion on the wheel of action, and it is in those spaces of black between the pictures that we find the heart of the mystery in which we are never allowed to rest.

I am proud to add Canada (and specifically White Rock, BC) to the list of locations that have been 4Qated.

I am also proud of myself for getting it together this year to celebrate Mr. H's Birthday with this wonderful activity.

It was left on beautiful White Rock Beach (in a protective ziplock bag) this afternoon, just before the heavy rain broke through and soaked myself and my wife. I've changed my pants and dried out ... but the grin remains on my face.

There are pictures on my flickr pages, here and here. They are identified only as SA4QE2005-1 and SA4QE2005-2, which, hopefully, will deepen the mystery.

Would love to attend the convention ... if someone could send me a free plane ticket!
